You want to feel securely connected to your people but sometimes that feels impossible.
Your relationships feel tense, chaotic, strained, or unfulfilling. The same conflicts replay over and over. It’s hard to open up, trust, and rely on others. It may be hard to even imagine relationships that meet your needs for intimacy, connection, and community. You may feel emotionally shut down, out of control, isolated, lonely, or resentful. But you dream of relationships where you feel deeply connected and loved, a life you share with your important others. Getting from here to there may feel like a mystery.
Maybe you were the peacekeeper in your family, have had to stay effective in distressing situations for work (healthcare workers, first responders, military), or were raised to suppress your emotions. You may feel empty or numb; experience pent up anger, outbursts, or panic attacks; withdraw into isolation and distraction; or engage in impulsive behavior, substance use, or infidelity. You’re used to dealing with things on your own or not dealing with them at all. Maybe someone has asked you to come to therapy and you don’t get why or an important relationship, like a marriage, is on the line if something doesn’t change.

You’re smart, capable, and effective at work and in other areas of life. You might even help others with this professionally. But at home, with family, in your most important relationships, it’s more challenging, and you’re not sure what to shift.
